The ”Moving Wall” is coming to the Talco Independence Day Fireworks Show from Wednesday, July 3, through Sunday, July 7. Talco’s fireworks show with food and giveaways is on Thursday, July 4, at 7:00 pm. The “Moving Wall” is a traveling replica of the Washington, DC, Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
The United Way of Lamar County is hosting a Poverty Simulation on Wednesday, July 10, at 1:00 pm in Lewis Hall, located behind Paris Regional Health. The event is free and open to the public, but all participants must register.
The One-and-a-half hour Poverty Simulation is an eye-opening and interactive experience that vividly portrays poverty’s lived realities and human impact. Executive Director Jenny Wilson states, “Participants will deepen their understanding of the challenges those living in poverty face. When we have insight into the chaos and crisis that poverty can create, we can have more empathy and tailor our behavior, speech, and approaches to achieve better outcomes.” This simulation will leave you with a profound sense of empathy and understanding.
More than 40% of US households struggle to afford essential needs, pushing them to make difficult decisions and take significant daily risks. Participants in the Poverty Simulation will experience this as they navigate transportation costs, childcare, rent, utilities, groceries, and unexpected expenses on a limited income.

The City of Paris Back to School Bash and school supply distribution returns to the Love Civic Center from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 10.
Students must be present to receive school supplies at the event, which also features games, entertainment, and food vendors. Local businesses are needed to provide school supplies and can set up booths to distribute supplies to students. Organizers expect a repeat of the over 5,000 students who received school supplies during the 2023 inaugural event.
“This event was scheduled before area school districts announced the change to 4-day school weeks and an earlier first day of classes.” Paris Deputy City Manager Robert Vine said. “We weren’t able to change the bash date, but we believe it is still important to help students and their teachers have the supplies they need for a successful school year.”
Businesses and individuals who want to participate can find a list of needed supplies at www.ParisTexas.gov/BackToSchool. Monetary contributions are also acceptable. Organizers are also in need of barbers, dentists, and eye care professionals who offer free haircuts and basic dental and eye exams. But most importantly, we need volunteers.
